MALACCA: Newly-minted city councillor Hashim Ishak (pic) has promised to focus on the needs of the disabled here.
The 58-year-old visually-impaired Hashim, who is currently the president of the Malacca Blind Association, is among four disabled Malaccans who have been appointed city councillors.
“I was at a loss for words when told that I was automatically selected as a local councillor by the state government just a few days ago.
“I promise to fight for the welfare of the disabled, especially by creating more infrastructure within the historic city for both locals and tourists,” he said, adding that he would ensure that there are more quality facilities for disabled persons.
The father of four also hopes to lobby for doors on public buses be made wider so as to accommodate wheelchairs or even elderly people with crutches.
“I will submit a comprehensive working paper on issues pertaining to the need for mobility, accessibility, and safety for disabled persons at my first meeting.
“I am not sure when I will be attending the first council meeting but am prepared to speak on the obstacles disabled people face here,” he said.
Hashim added that he would table a plan for safer sidewalks and crossings for disabled people.
Apart from Hashim, limbless English tutor Hisham Karim, mute self-employed Johari Omar and his peer Jasmin Tigol will also be putting forth ideas for better infrastructure and facilities for the disabled.
The four will be tasked with working closely with development implementation committees of the Malacca City Council (MBMB), the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ), Jasin Municipal Council (MPJ) and Alor Gajah Municipal Council (MPAG).
Hisham has been appointed as councillor with MPHTJ, Johari with MPAG, while Jasmin will serve as a councillor in MPJ.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the decision to appoint the disabled individuals was in line with the state government’s vision to provide better infrastructure for the community.
He said the names were proposed by the council’s presidents.
“Those individuals who have been made local councillors will enjoy the same status, privileges and allowances provided to other councillors,” he said.
