More Disabled-friendly Facilities Required
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- The Damai Disabled Persons Association of Selangor and the Federal Territory has urged the government to consider the
plight of the handicapped although it has allocated a whopping RM35 billion to create an efficient public transportation system.
"We are fine with the expenditure for public transportation but the government must also ensure that the facilities for the disabled to use the public transport
are adequate," its president V.Murugeswaran told Bernama.
He cited the example of the RapidKL buses, which are not disabled-friendly although there are signages in the buses which appear to be friendly to the less
fortunate.
"RapidKL has more than 100 buses with the OKU logo. Although there are ramps for wheelchairs, the operators do not use them and that attitude causes the
disabled to be sidelined from using the public transportation system," he said.
He also said that the government's decision to pay the disabled who are not employed RM70 to RM150 was insufficient as the amount was not enough to pay
for their medical expenses.
Murugeswaran proposed that the government introduce the mobility allowance for OKU to reduce their transport problem.
